Geographers describe where things are by using maps. A geographic grid is a grid of lines on Earths surface which makes up longitude and latitude. The angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian is called longitude. Latitude is the angular distance of a place north or south of earths equator. Parallels help us locate things better, they are used to measure degrees of latitude north or south of the Equator. Meridians are imaginary lines that run north and south to connect geographic poles used to indicate longitude. The four most important imaginary lines running across the surface of the earth are the equator, the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, and the prime meridian. In class we plotted the absolute locations on several points across the world map.
