day 19 Greece

today in class we went over some previous slides and newer slides.
- Draco (621 BC):
draconian: ver harsh punishment from the law
Draco was a leader and the following are some rules everyone obbided by:
- all athenians are equal under the law
- death is a punishment for many crimes
- work as a slave to pay debts is okay

- Solons reforms (594 BC):
Solon came along after Draco and changed tho his own way and likings:
- outlaws debt slavery
- all athenian citizens can speak at town assemblies
- any citizen can press charges on someone

-Hippias: was a tyrant who ruled from 527 BC to 510 BC
- his brother was murdered and he was very paranoied so whoever he thought had to do something with his brothers murder was killed, many people died
- rule became very harsh
- he was eventually expelled from Athens which means he was never allowed back in (also known as ostracized)
- after he was expelled he began working with the Persian king, Darius 1, to plan his rebellion
-invaded Marathon and we get the word marathon from the people running all the way to Athens from here to warn them
- Isagores and Cleisthenes ( they were both aristocrats) raced to be uncharge after the expulsion
- Isagores: he had support from the fellow aristocrats and Sparta
- Cleisthenes: majority of Athens votes
- Isagores wins and the first thing he does is ostracize Cleisthenes
- Athenian citizens (who wanted Cleisthenes as their ruler) revolt against Igagores
- traps him on the acropolis for two days
- he escapes on third day and banished
- 508 BC started Democracy
