Interpreting maps
Geographers describe where things are by using maps.
map scale- relationship of a features size on a map to its actual size earth
projection- scientific method of transferring locations on earths surface to a flat map
meridian- a circle of constant longitude passing through a given place on earths surface and the terrestrial poles
longitude- the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian of Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
parallel- side by side and having the same distance continuously between them
latitude- the angular distance of a place north of south of the earths equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
prime meridian- the planets line of 0 degrees longitude
the role of the map scale and map projection is reading maps that are accurately represent distances are referred to as equidistant projections
the three main map projections are:
1. Mercator
2. Robinson
3. Mollweide
