How do geographers describe where things are? Geographers use a map, their key tool. Cartography is the science of mapmaking. As a reference tool to identify an object's absolute and relative location. Maps help us locate what country, state or even town where it is. Maps are great ways to direct you to where you need to go. Absolute Location is the the exact site on an objective coordinate system, such as a grid. Relative location is the position of something relative to another land mark. Geographers use absolute and relative location to describe where things are. Older maps were made by using accurate surveying questions.
